Peppermint oil is extracted from the Mentha Piperita plant of the Labiatae family. This refreshing essential oil is used in aromatherapy to stimulate the mind, increase skill, and direct attention. Oil also helps with colon problems, migraines, headaches, sinusitis and digestive problems.


Peppermint oil has a fresh and sharp mint odor and is pale yellow in color with a watery viscosity.


Peppermint oil is extracted from the entire plant above the ground just before flowering. The oil is extracted by steam distillation of fresh or partially dried plants, with yields ranging from 0.1% to 1%.

Chemical composition

The chemical components of peppermint oil are: menthol, menthone, 1,8-cinnol, methyl acetate, methofuran, isomenthone, lemon, b-pinene, a-pinene, germacrene-g, trans-saquinate hydrate and pulegone.


Peppermint oil is not toxic or irritating at low doses, but because of its menthol content, it can be sensitizing in larger doses. This can cause skin and mucous membrane irritation and should be kept away from the eyes. It should be avoided during pregnancy and should not be used by children under 7 years of age.

Therapeutic properties

Therapeutic properties of peppermint oil are: analgesic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic, astringent, carrageenan, bile, cardiac, decongestant, expectorant, antipyretic, hepatic, stimulant, stomach, sweat, vasoconstrictor an anthelmintic agent.


Peppermint oil is an excellent remedy for mental fatigue and depression. It refreshes the spirit and stimulates concentration and dexterity. Helps in apathy, shock, headache, migraine, nervous stress, dizziness, fatigue, general respiratory disorders, dry cough, asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and cholera. For the digestive system, the oil is effective for a number of diseases. It stimulates the bladder and the secretion of bile. It is used in colic, spasms, dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea and can relieve pain in cases of a toothache, leg pain, rheumatism, neuralgia, muscle pain and painful menstruation.
