The essential oil of hyssop is extracted from the plant Hyssopus Officinalis, also known by the name Azob of the Labiatae family. This oil is quite expensive, but it is very effective for treating the airways and releasing from the accumulated mucus and bronchial spasms. It is also used to treat bronchitis, asthma, flu, colds, bruises and faster wound healing.


The oil of hyssop has a sweet and warm smell and color varies from colorless to pale yellow-green.


The oil of hyssop is extracted from the leaves and flowers of the plant by steam distillation.

Chemical composition

The main chemical components of the hyssop oil are: pinnate, camphine, b-pinene, saquinate, mycene, lemon, pinocamphone, isopinocamphene, Y-terpineol, 1,8-cinnene and tungone.


Hyssop oil is not irritating but contains the ingredient pinocamphone and should, therefore, be used in moderate amounts and avoided by pregnant women and people suffering from epilepsy.

Therapeutic properties

The therapeutical properties of hyssop oil are: anti-rheumatic, astringent, antiseptic, spasmolytic, gingival, digestive, diuretic, expectorant, antipyretic, hypertension, sweat, stimulant, tonic, antler and wounds.


Hyssop oil strengthens the sense of vigilance and helps in anxiety and fatigue, which is why it is recommended as a recovery remedy after illness and as a general tonic. It is also effective in cases of respiratory problems, viral infections, sore throat, flu, bronchitis, asthma, runny nose and tonsillitis.
It also helps with colic, indigestion, regulation of blood circulation and the increase of low blood pressure. Balances the menstrual cycle of women and helps with amenorrhea and whitening.

  • Application of inhalers: In the treatment with vapors, hyssop oil can help with anxiety, mental fatigue, colds, cough, bronchitis, asthma and infections.
  • Use in massage oils and in the bathroom: Massaging or bathing hyssop oil relieves anxiety, fatigue, respiratory and viral infections, menstrual problems, colic, indigestion, etc.
  • Application in creams and lotions Hyssop as a cream and lotion ingredient helps in faster skin healing without permanent scars and to remove bruises.
