It is derived from the resin of Boswellia carteri of the family Burseraceae and is also known by the name Olibanum. It is one of the most preferred oils in aromatherapy. This essential oil has an incredibly soothing effect on the mind and helps to build internal peace. It cleanses the respiratory and urinary tract and relieves rheumatism and muscle pain. The oil has a rejuvenating, balancing and prophylactic effect on the skin.


Frankincense oil has a woody, spicy and slightly compulsive but very pleasant scent. In color it is yellow-green.


The Frankincense oil is extracted by steam distillation of the resin from the tree and yields 3 – 10%.

Chemical composition

The main chemical constituents of the Frankincense oil are: pinen, actanol, linalool, octyl acetate, bornyl acetate, incensole and incensyl acetate.


Frankincense oil is not toxic or irritating and most people can safely use it.

Therapeutic properties

The therapeutic properties of Frankincense oil are: antiseptic, astringent, gingival, digestive, diuretic, expectorant, sedative, tonic, expectorant, and wounds.


Frankincense oil soothes the mind and is excellent for use during meditation. It helps to get rid of our anxiety and obsession with the past. Helps the airways by clearing the lungs and helping with asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis, cough and cold.
It is used as a general reliever during severe periods and has a soothing effect during labor. It also helps in rheumatism and affects positively the urinary tract.
Frankincense oil has a rejuvenating effect on the skin and helps in wounds, boils, scars and inflammation of the skin.

  • Application for inhalers: In the therapy with vapors, the oil helps in bronchitis, colds, coughing and loss of voice. It calms the mind, reduces anxiety and brings inner peace.
  • Use as massage oil and in the bath: Frankincense oil can be used mixed with massage oil or dissolved in the tub and helps in colds, cough, bronchitis, rheumatism, cold, poor circulation, exhaustion, nightmares, severe periods, respiratory problems and congestion mucus. It also has a good firming effect on the skin and promotes faster wound healing.
  • Application in creams and lotions: Added to creams and lotions, incense oil helps the general health and tone of the skin. Rejuvenates the skin and tackles problems such as oily skin, ulcers and wounds.
  • Wash and Compress: For wound disinfection, add a few drops of Frankincense oil and then wash the wounds. In the case of cracked skin, apply a compressed oil of incense oil on affected areas.
